Review: The three-disc box set titled 'The Bossa Nova Story' includes the Jazz Masters editions covering Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz (each available separately as well). It's practically impossible to imagine three better subjects with which to explore the rich field of bossa nova (especially since major pioneer Joo Gilberto appears on many tracks with Getz), but it's a bit of a shame that the one track most identified with bossa nova ? 'The Girl from Ipanema', taken from the Getz/Gilberto LP ? is present only in an inferior live version. That's not a huge problem for those who already have the track, but bossa fans may want to look elsewhere, perhaps to original sources like Getz/Gilberto itself, plus a good Astrud Gilberto album like The Silver Collection. Review: This is basically a Charlie Parker album that Miles Davis plays on, largely consisting of old Dial masters. Only on the August 1947 session is Davis listed as leader - the date which produced 'Little Willie Leaps', 'Sippin' at Bell's', 'Half Nelson' and the title track. Although these are some of Parker's best - and some of jazz's greatest early bop sides, chances are you should check your collection to make sure you don't already have these tracks on another compilation. Review: Malaco's Masters of Jazz Sampler is a nifty look at some of jazz's best-known melodies; while it's by no means an attempt to survey all of 'jazz's greatest hits', casual jazz fans will at least have heard of most of these tunes, and will undoubtedly recognize more than a few upon hearing them. Two of Louis Armstrong's best-known hits, 'Mack The Knife' and 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On', are here; Duke Ellington is well represented too, with two tracks of his own ('Take The 'A' Train' and 'Sophisticated Lady'), as well as an Oscar Peterson version of 'Satin Doll'. Meanwhile, Cannonball Adderley performs his jazz-funk hits 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' and 'The Work Song', and Thelonious Monk plays his oft-covered 'Epistrophy'. Overall, it's a good basic sampler for casual jazz fans. Paris Jazz Concerts - Masters Of Jazz Sampler / Various Artists

Review: Blue Note Records hit its creative peak in the late '60s, a time when jazz was being flooded with influences from across the musical spectrum and around the world. Blue 'n Groovy 2 captured the crackling energy of this time, and shows the funk, soul, and Latin infused grooves of artists like The Jazz Messengers, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan and Art Pepper. Blue 'N' Groovy, Vol. 2 - Mostly Modal / Various Artists

Review: These are sides cut by Dizzy's short-lived big band, a noble experiment that produced some exciting music during its brief existence. Tracks like 'Alone Together', 'Manteca' (with legendary percussionist Pozo), 'I Can't Get Started', and 'Tin Tin Deo' catch Gillespie orchestrating his sound in ways both innovative and elegant, yet raw and swinging. 'Lady Be Good', 'Long Long Summer', 'No Greater Love', 'The Mooche', and the title track are all live from various radio airchecks, and some sound quite battered. Not essential Diz, but not awful, either. Night In Tunisia (live) / Dizzy Gillespie Big Band

#1 rec.: May 14, 1958 in Manhattan. KENNY BURRELL (g); LOUIS SMITH (tb); TINA
BROOKS, JUNIOR COOK (ts); DUKE JORDAN (p); SAM JONES (b); ART
BLAKEY (dr). Burrell leads a very coherent jam session in the studio with a
particularly strong cast. 'I Never Knew' has excellent playing all round. At that point
in time, Cook and Brooks had similar sounds. The solo star is trumpeter Louis
Smith, who fell into obscurity after a few notable appearances on Blue Note, as
here, on this 5 star CD. He was one of  the finest of the Clifford Brown-influenced
players of the period and deserves much greater recognition. 'I Never Knew' is
     recommended to hard-bop collectors.
#2 rec.: April 30, 1962 in NYC. KENNY BURRELL (g); LEO WRIGHT (as); JACK
MCDUFF (org); JOE DUKES (dr). The results on this straightahead music, taken
from the Columbia LP 'Bluesin' Around', are superb. Altogether an unmissable CD.
#3 rec.: Nov. 29, 1961 in NYC. KENNY BURRELL (g); ILLINOIS JACQUET (ts); HANK
JONES (p); MAJOR HOLLEY (b); JIMMY CRAWFORD (dr).
#4,10 rec.: Feb. 1957 in Hackensack/New Jersey. KENNY BURRELL (g); CECIL
PAYNE(bar-s); TOMMY FLANAGAN (p); DOUG WATKINS (b); ELVIN JONES
(dr). Guitarist Kenny Burrell, 25 at the time, is heard here during one of his
earliersessions, playing in his already recognizable straightahead style, with a fine
swinging quintet. Both these  tunes are enjoyable music.
#5 rec.: March 6, 1962 in NYC. KENNY BURRELL (g); EDDIE BERT (tb); HANK
JONES (p); GEORGE DUVIVIER (b); LOUIS HAYES (dr).
  #6 rec.: Dec. 17, 1956 & January 5, 1957 in Hackensack. KENNY BURRELL (g);
FRANKWESS (fl); FREDDIE GREEN (rhythm-g); EDDIE JONES (b); GUS
JOHNSON (dr on #6); KENNY CLARKE (dr on #9). Although the original LP,
'Monday Stroll' was reissued under Kenny Burrell's name, it was originally led by
Frank Wess, who is heard doubling on flute & tenor. Wess is in excellent form on a
set very reminiscent (not too surprisingly considering the personnel) of the Count
Basie band. This is a fine straightforward date, with Wes' flute taking solo honours
     on #9.
#7 rec.: March 7, 1958 in Hackensack. KENNY BURRELL (g); JOHN COLTRANE
(ts); TOMMY FLANAGAN (p); PAUL CHAMBERS (b); JIMMY COBB (dr). John
Coltrane recorded many interesting jam session-type dates in the 1950s. This
match-up with guitarist Kenny Burrell finds the group stretching out on Flanagan's '
Freight Trane'. Overall, the music is excellent for the time period, with Coltrane
displaying some ofhis sheets of sound and Burrell sounding inspired by 'Trane's
     presence.
#8 rec.: Nov. 21, 1961 in NYC. same as #3 but OSIE JOHNSON replaces JIMMY
     CRAWFORD on dr.
#11 rec.: Aug. 25, 1959. KENNY BURRELL (g); TINA BROOKS (ts); BOBBY
TIMMONS (p); BEN TUCKER (b); ART BLAKEY (dr). This likeable live track has a
strong supporting cast. The swinging version of  'Lady Be Good' is quite
mainstream for theperiod and predictably excellent.
