This 1999 Spanish CD compilation reissues the entire contents of two of Lalo Schifrin's most obscure LP´s: 'Bossa Nova', an Eddie Harris sextet session from the VEE JAY label (with Lalo's arrangements, piano and 3 Schifrin compositions) plus the pianist's 1962 Audio Fidelity LP, 'Bossa Nova - New Brazilian Jazz'. Both serve as nice pieces of memorabilia from the bossa nova craze that swept jazz in the early 1960s. Both also feature a heaping helping of Schifrin's ever-effervescent piano work. The Eddie Harris date is too harshly recorded (and unusually unexciting) for bossa nova - but Harris, Schifrin and guitarist Jimmy Raney make it worthwhile. The far better Schifrin samba sampler essentially recreates the Gillespie band without Dizzy in bossa nova mode. Leo Wright's reed work, here as elsewhere, is always a pleasure to hear and Schifrin is dynamic on piano, especially on 'Chora Tua Tristeza', 'O Apito No Samba', 'Chega de Saudade', 'Menina Feia' and 'Samba de Uma Nota So'. Review: The Alto Sax volume of the Jazz-Club series is organized in an individual way that illustrates the dominant influence of one man, over an entire generation of altoists, all born between 1923 and 1933. It starts out with 'Now's the Time' in the hands of Charlie Parker, the fountainhead of bop on the alto, and then mostly contemplates the ongoing adventures of the bopsters and the coolsters; in other words, the Parker and the anti-Parker. The most historic track - and the only example of pre-Parker styles - finds Benny Carter, Johnny Hodges and Parker trading blues licks for the first few minutes of a 13-plus-minute Norman Granz jam session on 'Funky Blues' (tenors Flip Phillips and Ben Webster also join in). Another, shorter alto summit, 'Prompt', throws together Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Leo Wright and Pony Poindexter. The rest of the estimable lineup includes Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Mariano, Paul Desmond (with Gerry Mulligan), Sonny Stitt, Jackie Mc Lean, Gigi Gryce, Eric Dolphy (drawing from Parker and Hodges with Charles Mingus' big band in 'Bemoanable Lady'), and Herb Geller. Reviews: Unlike many other box sets currently available, this four-CD package is actually a sampler taken from Joe Henderson's many recordings for Blue Note; all but three selections date from 1963-69. Out of the 36 selections, 26 feature the great tenor as a sideman and some are from sessions not re-issued in quite awhile. Henderson is instantly recognizable (his distinctive tone has not changed much since 1963) and an asset to each of these performances. Also included in the box is a very attractive 40-page booklet that is highlighted by his complete Blue Note discography. This set is particularly recommended to listeners only vaguely aware of Joe Henderson's powerful music.
                             --
The Blue Note Years features 36 tracks beginning with Joe Henderson's 1963 Blue Note debut 'Una Mas' to 1990's 'For The Moment'. This set also contains many rare Blue Note sessions including a live performance with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra previously unavailable on CD. Included with the 4 discs is a 40-page booklet with previously unpublished photographs by Francis Wolff and a complete discography.

Review: Many of Dizzy Gillespie's recordings for the Verve label in the '50s and early '60s (when he was at the peak of his powers) have inexcusably been out of print for decades. This 3-CD set is a sampler of his legacy, with the discs subtitled 'Big Band', 'Small Groups & Guests' and 'In an Afro-Cuban, Bossa Nova, Calypso Groove'. The programming jumps all over the place and makes little sense but this set serves as a good excuse to acquire 40 performances by the great Gillespie and the many all-stars who recorded with him. Few but the most fanatical veteran Gillespie fans will have had all of these selections in their collection. This will fill a void until Verve gets around to doing a much more comprehensive Dizzy Gillespie reissue program.

Review: Funky Beats collects ten random funk, soul and soul-jazz cuts from the Prestige vaults. There are no real surprises here and it tends to be a little bit kitschy in certain areas, but on the whole, there's enough strong, funky, infectious tunes here to keep listeners interested. It does get a little samey at times, but on the whole, it's a solid, entertaining collection of spirited instrumentals. Funky Beats / Various Artists
